You invested in a handmade badge reel. Now let's make sure it lasts. Badge reels take a beating on the floor — constant retraction, hand sanitizer splashes, accidental drops, and the general chaos of a hospital shift. With a little care, your reel can look great and function perfectly for years.
Here's exactly how to keep yours in top shape — from someone who wears one every shift.
Cleaning your badge reel
For rhinestone toppers (sealed resin)
Our rhinestone toppers are sealed in resin, which makes them easy and safe to clean:
- Wipe with a slightly damp cloth or a gentle baby wipe
- Hospital-grade disinfecting wipes (like PDI wipes) are safe to use on the sealed topper
- Avoid soaking or submerging in water — the reel mechanism is not waterproof
- Avoid bleach-based products directly on the rhinestones, as this can dull the finish over time
For clay topper reels
Clay toppers are more delicate than resin-sealed ones:
- Wipe gently with a dry or barely damp cloth
- Avoid harsh chemicals entirely
- Don't scrub — clay can chip if pressure is applied directly to edges
Caring for the retractable mechanism
The mechanism is what makes your badge reel functional — and it's the part most likely to wear out first if not cared for properly:
- Don't overextend the cord. Pull your badge out to scan, then let it retract naturally. Yanking the cord to its maximum length repeatedly will wear out the spring mechanism faster.
- Let it retract on its own. Don't push the cord back in manually — the spring mechanism is designed to do this work.
- Avoid dropping the reel repeatedly. A single hard drop can jar the retractable mechanism and cause cord slack or misalignment.
Badge reel clip care
- Alligator swivel clips: wipe clean with a damp cloth; the swivel joint should move freely. If it feels stiff, a tiny drop of clear nail oil on the joint helps.
- Belt clips: check that the spring tension still snaps firmly. If it feels loose, it may need to be replaced.
When to reach out about your warranty
All Jazz & Co. Creations badge reels come with a 90-day hardware warranty. If your retractable mechanism fails — meaning the cord won't retract, the spring is broken, or the clip mechanism snaps — contact us at karen@jazzandcocreations.com with your order number and a photo. We'll replace the hardware, no questions asked.
Note: the warranty covers hardware failure, not cosmetic wear (rhinestone loss from heavy physical contact, for example) or damage from misuse.
Storing your badge reel off-shift
When you're not on shift, keep your badge reel in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure can fade the colors in clay toppers and dull rhinestone sparkle over time. A small jewelry dish on your nightstand or a pouch in your bag works perfectly.
Take care of it and it'll take care of you — shift after shift after shift. 💕
